20세기 초인 1914년까지 거슬러 올라가는 자료를 수집, 보존 중인 뉴욕 휘트니 미술관의 아카이브(링크), 1945년 이후의 인도네시아 시각 예술가 4400명 이상의 자료를 디지털로 바꿔 크리에에티브 커먼스 공개 라이센스로 제공하는 인도네시아 시각 예술 아카이브(IVAA)(링크). 이처럼 엄청난 아카이브를 보면서, (주로 한국에 있는) 우리는 생각하게 됩니다.

우리의 역사는 어디에 있는가?

큐레이팅 스쿨 서울 0.5학기 두 번째 수업은 ‘큐레이팅’을 열쇳말로 우리의 역사를 추적하는 모험을 떠납니다. 그리고 그 목적지는 백남준아트센터(링크)입니다.

수업의 목적

• ‘백남준’이라는 하나의 주제 아래 수행된 다양한 방식과 전략의 큐레이팅 사례를 접함으로써 큐레이팅의 다양한 면면을 알아본다.
• 큐레이팅의 과정에서 맞닥뜨리는 과제와 요구, 해결의 과정과 고민을 살펴본다.
• 이를 통해 참가자 개개인이 자신의 큐레이팅을 구체적으로 상상하는 기회를 마련한다.

수업의 일정

• 세션 1 – 오리엔테이션 (10월 12일 토요일 오후 7시 30분-9시 30분 (온/오프라인)
• 세션 2 – 발제 (10월 중, 참여자 합의하에 결정)
• 세션 3 – 필드트립 (11월 중, 참여자 합의하에 결정)

수업의 상세 내용

• 세션 1 – 오리엔테이션 (진행: 박세진)
  • 먼저, 백남준 아트센터의 미션, 역사, 현황 등을 굵직한 주제를 살펴보며 기관에 대한 큰 그림을 그려본다.
  • 오리엔테이션 후반부에는 기관을 더 깊이 들여다보는데 도움이 될 열쇳말들을 토의를 통해 찾아본다.
  • 마지막으로, 참여자들마다 다음 몇 주 동안 탐구하고 싶은 열쇳말을 정한다.
• 세션 2 – 발제
  • 참여자들이 서로 가르치며 배우는 시간이다. 참여자들은 열쇳말을 중심으로 살펴본 백남준 아트센터의 면면을 동료들에게 10~15분 분량의 발표로 전달한다.
  • 발제는 공동의 배움과 앎의 총량을 늘리는 것을 목표로 하며, 평가를 위한 것이 아니다.
  • 두 번의 사전 스터디를 기반으로 현장학습에서 함께 살펴 보고 싶은 것, 더 알아보고 싶은 것들이 무엇인지 이야기를 나눈다.
• 세션 3 – 필드트립
  • 진행중인 전시를 관람하고, 기관 관계자들과 대화를 나누어 볼 수 있는 기회를 마련할 예정이다.
  • 현장학습 신청은 별도로 받되, 세션 1,2 참여자들에게 우선권을 준다.

The Whitney Museum of American Art in New York maintains an archive (link) with materials dating back to 1914 in the early 20th century. The Indonesian Visual Art Archive (IVAA) (link) digitizes and provides materials from over 4,400 Indonesian visual artists since 1945 under a Creative Commons open license. Looking at these impressive archives, we (mainly in Korea) are led to wonder:

The second ‘class’ of Curating School Seoul’s semester 0.5 embarks on an adventure to trace our history with ‘curating’ as the keyword. And our destination is the Nam June Paik Art Center (link).

Class Objectives

• Explore various aspects of curating by encountering diverse methods and strategies of curating performed under the single theme of ‘Nam June Paik’.
• Examine the challenges, demands, and problem-solving processes encountered during the curatorial process.
• Provide an opportunity for each participant to concretely imagine their own curating.

Class Schedule

• Session 1 – Orientation (Friday, October 11th, 8-10 PM (online/offline))
• Session 2 – Presentation (Mid-October, date to be decided by participant consensus)
• Session 3 – Field Trip (November, date to be decided by participant consensus)

Detailed Class Content

• Session 1 – Orientation (Led by: Sejin Park)
  • First, we’ll draw a big picture of the institution by looking at the major themes of Nam June Paik Art Center’s mission, history, and current status.
  • In the latter part of the orientation, we’ll discuss and find keywords that will help us look deeper into the institution.
  • Finally, each participant will decide on a keyword they want to explore over the next few weeks.
• Session 2 – Presentation
  • This is a time for participants to teach and learn from each other. Participants will deliver a 10-15 minute presentation to their peers on aspects of the Nam June Paik Art Center centered around their chosen keyword.
  • The presentation aims to increase the collective learning and knowledge, and is not for evaluation purposes.
  • Based on two preliminary studies, we will discuss what we want to look at more closely and learn more about during the field trip.
• Session 3 – Field Trip
  • We plan to arrange an opportunity to view ongoing exhibitions and have conversations with institutional representatives.
  • Field trip applications will be taken separately, with priority given to participants of Sessions 1 and 2.
