2025년 5월 2일 오전 11시, 큐레이팅 스쿨 제1학기 코어 멤버 선정 결과를 개별적으로 연락드렸습니다. 지원자들께 말씀드린 바와 같이, 코어 멤버 선정의 첫 번째 기준은 성취나 능력, 역량에 대한 평가가 아니었습니다. 함께 하는 배움의 폭을 최대한 넓히기, 이를 위해 서로 다른 경험과 배경의 사람들을 모으기에 초점을 맞추었습니다.

2013년 제0학기 참여자로 이번 제1학기 코어 멤버 선정 과정에 함께 해주신 김진주 큐레이터의 총평에 운영진이 전하고 싶은 이야기가 담겨 있어, 웹사이트를 통해 공유합니다.

이번 심사를 진행하며 한 사람 한 사람에 대한 평가를 내리는 것이 과연 옳은 일인가에 대해, 저는 계속해서 의문과 성찰을 반복했습니다. 그래서 이번에는 개별 코멘트를 남기기보다, 제가 어떤 분들을 선정하고자 했는지, 그리고 어떤 분들을 함께하지 못했는지에 대해 간략히 말씀드리고자 합니다. (‘선정하지 않았다’는 표현보다는 ‘함께하지 못했다’는 말이 더 적절하게 느껴집니다.)

지원서를 읽으면서 자연스럽게 저만의 선정 기준을 찾아갔습니다. 그것은 ‘관계, 삶, 사고, 실천, 가능성, 지속, 배움, 그리고 함께하기’였습니다. 저에게 큐레이팅 스쿨 서울은 전문적인 전시 기획자가 되기 위한 훈련의 장이라기보다는, 그보다 훨씬 근본적인 배움과 나눔의 공간입니다. 이곳에서의 배움은 ‘가르침’의 전달이나 이를 ‘활용’하기 위한 기술 습득과는 다릅니다. 큐스서가 중요하게 여기는 경험은, 나 자신을 들여다보는 것에서 출발해 함께하는 사람들과의 관계를 관찰하고 인식해 나가는 과정입니다. 그렇기에 강의뿐 아니라 세미나, 실습, 현장 방문, 리뷰 등의 입체적인 구성이 필요하고, 이 모든 여정은 결국 참여자 스스로를 ‘공동’ 창작자로 의미화하게 만드는 데 닿아 있다고 생각합니다. 큐스서가 작성한 참여자 모집 개요의 마지막 문장은 결코 우연히 쓰인 것이 아니겠지요.

이러한 이해를 바탕으로, 저는 ‘함께하는 여정’을 시작할 준비가 되어 있는 분들이야말로 이 만남의 핵심이라고 생각했습니다. 다양한 전공과 직업, 관심사를 지닌 분들이 지원해 주셨고, 꼭 미술이라는 경계 안에 머물지 않는 분들도 있었습니다. 그중에는 미술이라는 언어가 가진 익숙함을 뒤흔들며, 우리가 무엇을 ‘안다’고 여겨왔는지를 다시 생각하게 만드는 분들도 계셨습니다. 특히 서울이 아닌 지역에서 오랜 시간 자신의 역할을 탐색해 온 분들이 인상 깊었습니다. 이들은 공동의 기반 위에서 삶을 확장할 수 있다는 믿음을 지니고 있었고, 함께하는 힘이 개인의 힘을 넘는다는 사실을 알고 있었습니다. 그 바람을 응답처럼 담아낸 지원서를 읽으며 반가움과 동시에, 약간의 씁쓸함도 느꼈습니다. 우리는 과거에 학교란 나와 다른 또래를 만나 함께 살기를 학습하는 곳이라 여겼습니다. 그러나 어느 순간부터 공동의 모양은 희미해지고 지식의 크기에 배움을 기대었던 우리의 과거를, 지금의 우리가 같이 애달파 하는 것도 같습니다. 이번 큐레이팅 스쿨의 새로운 시작이 그런 함께함을 다시 회복할 수 있는 시간이 되리라는 생각을 품어 봅니다.

제가 과연 누군가의 배우고자 하는 열망에 대해 함부로 말을 얹어도 될지 조심스럽지만, 제 경험을 통해 이 여정에 필요한 것이 무엇인지 조금이나마 전할 수 있을지도 모르겠습니다. 저는 11년 5개월 전, 큐레이팅 스쿨 서울 0학기에 참여했고, 그때 큐레이터가 되고 싶었습니다. 지금은 정말로 전시를 만드는 큐레이터가 되었지만, 아이러니하게도 당시에는 전시 기획에 대해 본격적으로 배우지 않았습니다. 다만, ‘큐레이팅’이라는 개념을 중심에 두고, 약 6개월간 사직동 주택, 시청각, 노량진 수산시장, 경마장 같은 곳을 다니며 강의를 듣거나 글을 쓰고, 현장을 관찰하고 대화를 나누면서, 기획이라는 행위가 일어나는 다양한 가능성과 방향성을 열 명의 참여자들과 함께 경험하고 체득했습니다. 그 모든 시간은 지금까지도 제가 하는 일의 단단한 기반이 되고 있습니다. 돌이켜 보면 ‘전시’를 업의 중심으로 삼고 있다는 사실이 역설적으로 느껴질 만큼, 당시의 경험은 전시에 관한 것이 아니라 감각에 관한 것이었습니다. 그것이 어쩌면 1학기로 이어진 ‘큐레이팅 스쿨 서울’ 자체의 지향점이었던 듯도 합니다.

그래서 저는 이곳의 과정을 직업적 성취나 경제적 상승을 위한 도약이 아니라, 배움이라는 작은 초석과 나눔이라는 조금 더 큰 덩어리를 기꺼이 감당해 보는 시도라고 여깁니다. 선정되신 분들을 부를 새로운 이름이 필요할지도 모르겠습니다. ‘동행자’, 혹은 ‘친구’. ‘일행’이라는 말도 좋겠습니다. 함께 길을 걷는 사람들의 무리라는 뜻이니까요. 이렇게 평가 같지 않은 평가를 마무리하며, 이번 큐레이팅 스쿨 서울 1학기를 향한 기대를 담아 글을 맺습니다. 무엇보다 이곳이 경쟁이 아닌 평등한 관계를 기반으로, 각자의 세계를 더 깊고 넓게 알아가며, 실패하면 실패하는 대로 그 안에서 배움과 나눔을 발견하는 장이 되기를 바랍니다.

김진주

전시를 기획하고 글을 쓴다. 학부에서 회화를 전공했다. 2013년 겨울, 학교 밖 학교를 상상하며 다양한 가능성과 확장성을 만나고자 ‘큐레이팅 스쿨 0학기’에 참여했다. 2017년에는 회화를 접고 대학원에서 미술이론을 공부하기 시작하여, 2020년부터 여러 기관을 거쳐 전시 기획자의 삶을 사는 중이다. 가장 좋아하는 미술 이야기는 2020년대의 한국 미술, 특히 회화가 지닌 특징을 캔버스와 유화 조합이 발명된 1500년대 이탈리아 베네치아의 회화와 연결하는 시나리오다. 가까운 시공간을 거시 세계로 바라보고, 멀리 멀리 물러나 이곳을 이루어 준 기원, 근원, 원천 같은 세계를 미시적으로 탐험하는 일을 즐긴다. 큐레이터란 그러한 시도를 통해 주체성을 형성해야 한다고 믿는 동시에, 언제나 나 아닌 다른 이들의 시선과 마음을 관찰하는 태도를 견지할 책임이 있다고 믿는다.

이제, 코어 멤버들은 5월 10일(토) 오리엔테이션과 비폭력 대화 워크숍을 시작으로 8개월의 여정을 시작하게 됩니다. 학기를 함께 할 코어 멤버 중에는 서울을 기반으로 활동하지 않는 이들의 숫자도 작지 않습니다. 경제적 지원이 필요한 인원들에게는 ‘파트너’ 및 ‘후원자’로 의사를 밝혀주신 분들의 도움을 통해 적절한 지원을 제공할 수 있게 되었습니다.

코어 멤버 모집은 마무리되었지만, ‘파트너’와 ‘후원자’로 함께 해주실 분들에게는 여전히 문이 열려 있습니다.

On May 2nd, 2025, at 11 AM, we individually contacted applicants regarding the selection results for the Core Members of the first semester of the Curating School Seoul. As we mentioned to all applicants, our primary selection criterion was not an assessment of achievements, abilities, or competencies. Instead, we focused on maximizing the breadth of learning for everyone involved by bringing together people with diverse experiences and backgrounds.

We are sharing on our website the overall assessment from Curator KIM Jinju, who participated as a member of the 0th semester in 2013 and joined us for the Core Member selection process for this 1st semester. Her assessment contains messages that the organizing committee would like to share with everyone.

Throughout this selection process, I repeatedly questioned and reflected on whether it was right to evaluate each person individually. Therefore, instead of leaving individual comments, I would like to briefly share about the kind of persons I wanted to select, and those with whom we could not work together at this time. (The expression ‘could not work together’ feels more appropriate than ‘not selected.’)

While reading the applications, I naturally developed my own selection criteria. These were ‘relationships, life, thinking, practice, possibility, sustainability, learning, and togetherness.’ For me, Curating School Seoul is not merely a training ground for becoming a professional exhibition curator, but rather a much more fundamental space for learning and sharing. The learning that happens here differs from the transmission of ‘teaching’ or acquiring skills for ‘utilization.’ The experience that CSS values begins with looking inward at oneself and progresses to observing and recognizing relationships with others. That’s why we need a multidimensional structure including not only lectures but also seminars, practical exercises, field visits, and reviews. I believe all this journey ultimately leads participants to meaningful roles as ‘co-creators.’ The final sentence in CSS’s participant recruitment overview was certainly not written by chance.

Based on this understanding, I believed that people who were ready to begin this ‘shared journey’ were truly the essence of this gathering. Applicants came from diverse academic backgrounds, professions, and interests, and some weren’t strictly confined within the boundaries of art. Among them were individuals who shook up the familiarity of art as a language, making us reconsider what we’ve thought we ‘know.’ I was particularly impressed by those who had been exploring their roles in regions outside of Seoul for a long time. They held the belief that life could be expanded on a common foundation and knew that collective strength surpasses individual power. Reading applications that captured these aspirations like a response brought me both joy and a touch of bitterness. We once considered school as a place to meet peers different from ourselves and learn to live together. But it seems that at some point, the shape of community faded, and we – our present selves – collectively lament our past that leaned on the size of knowledge for learning. I hope that this new beginning of the CSS will be a time to restore such togetherness.

While I’m cautious about commenting on someone else’s desire to learn, perhaps I can share something about what’s needed for this journey through my own experience. 11 years and 5 months ago, I participated in the Semester Zero of Curating School Seoul, wanting to become a curator. Ironically, although I’ve truly become an exhibition curator now, I didn’t formally study exhibition planning back then. Instead, with ‘curating’ as the central concept, I spent about 6 months visiting places like a residence in Sajik-dong, Audio Visual Pavilion, Noryangjin Fish Market, and the racecourse – listening to lectures, writing, observing sites, and engaging in conversations. Through these experiences with ten participants, I embodied various possibilities and directions where the act of planning takes place. All that time continues to serve as a solid foundation for my work today. Looking back, it seems paradoxical that exhibition-making has become central to my profession, as the experience then wasn’t about exhibitions but about sensibility. That seems to have been the very orientation of ‘Curating School Seoul’ itself, which has now continued into its first semester.

That’s why I view this process not as a stepping stone for professional achievement or economic advancement, but as an attempt to willingly embrace the small cornerstone of learning and the slightly larger mass of sharing. Perhaps we need a new name for those who have been selected: ‘Companions,’ or ‘Friends.’ The term ‘Travel Party’ would also be fitting, as it means a group of people walking the path together. As I conclude this assessment that doesn’t quite feel like an assessment, I end with expectations for the first semester of Curating School Seoul. Above all, I hope this becomes a place based on equal relationships rather than competition, where everyone can discover their worlds more deeply and broadly, and find learning and sharing even through failure, whatever form it takes.

KIM Jinju

KIM Jinju organizes exhibitions and writes on art. She majored in painting as an undergraduate. In winter 2013, she participated in the Curating School to explore various possibilities and expansions by imagining a school outside traditional education. In 2017, she set aside painting and began studying art theory in graduate school, and since 2020, she has been working as a curator at various institutions. Her favorite art narrative connects the characteristics of Korean art in the 2020s, especially painting, with the paintings of 16th century Venice, Italy, where the combination of canvas and oil paint was invented. She enjoys viewing nearby time and space as a macro world, while stepping far back to microscopically explore the origins, roots, and sources that have shaped this place. She believes that a curator must form subjectivity through such attempts, while simultaneously maintaining the responsibility to observe the perspectives and minds of others.

Now, the Core Members will begin their 8-month journey starting with an orientation and nonviolent communication workshop on Saturday, May 10th. Among the Core Members joining this semester, there is a significant number who do not base their activities in Seoul. We are pleased to announce that appropriate support can be provided to those who need financial assistance, thanks to the help of individuals who have expressed their willingness to be ‘Partners’ and ‘Sponsors.’
