큐레이팅 스쿨 서울 제1학기 첫 주제인 “당연하지 않은 감각”을 탐구하는 공개 강연이 열렸습니다. 강연은 “힘빼고 컴퍼니”와의 대담 형식으로 진행되었습니다. 힘빼고 컴퍼니는 중도 저시력 연극인 이성수와 중도 시각장애인 장근영으로 구성된 팀으로, 배리어프리 에세이 『우리는 이렇게 생각해 : 예술현장의 배리어프리 리얼타임』의 저자이기도 합니다.

Curating School Seoul held an open lecture exploring “Uncommon Sensibilities,” the first topical domain we are addressing in our first semester. The lecture was conducted as a dialogue with “Himpego Company,” a team consisting of LEE Seongsu, a theater artist with acquired low vision, and JANG Geunyoung, a person with acquired visual impairment. They are also the authors of the barrier-free essay This Is What We Think: Real-time Barrier-free in Art Scenes.

공개강연에는 큐레이팅 스쿨 서울의 코어 멤버와 파트너, 그리고 이번 강연에 관심을 가진 신청자들이 온라인과 오프라인으로 참여했습니다. 공교롭게도 같은 날 오픈한 국립현대미술관 서울관에서의 전시 《기울인 몸들: 서로의 취약함이 만날 때》에 참여한 싱가포르 작가 알레시아 네오도 자리에 함께했습니다.

The open lecture was attended by Curating School Seoul’s core members and partners, as well as audiences interested in the lecture, both online and offline. Coincidentally, Singaporean artist Alecia Neo, who participated in the exhibition Looking after Each Other that opened the same day at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, also joined the session.

이성수와 장근영은 시각예술과 공연예술 분야에서 관람자, 창작자, 접근성 개선 자문가 등으로 활동한 자신들의 경험을 기반으로 예술 현장의 접근성과 다양성에 대한 생각을 들려주었습니다. 이날 두 강연자와 함께 나눈 이야기의 주제들은 다음과 같습니다.

“힘빼고 컴퍼니”라는 이름에 대한 소개

LEE Seongsu and JANG Geunyoung shared their thoughts on accessibility and diversity in the art field, drawing from their experiences as audience members, creators, and accessibility consultants in visual and performing arts. The topics discussed with the two speakers that day were as follows:

Introduction to the name “Himpego Company”
On comments that Himpego Company’s activities are “not disabled enough”—the persistent stereotypes revealed by such comments Thoughts on the rapidly increasing discussions and approaches regarding ‘accessibility’ in the arts over recent years
With the expansion of accessibility discourse, thoughts on the institutionalization of “disability arts” and exhibitions themed around accessibility & experiences of participation
How Himpego Company approaches viewing art exhibitions
Himpego Company’s activities—the catalyst for starting theater and their work over the years
Thoughts on new technologies such as AI and voice interfaces
- “It seems to be developing in a very vision-centered way”
On the ‘inefficiency’ and slow pace that accessibility presupposes About Himpego Company’s recent work State-Certified Masseur—what sensibilities did they aim to convey to audiences through theater?
Changes brought to Korea’s art world by ICOM’s new museum definition pursuing ‘diversity’ and ‘inclusivity,’ and similar changes in the performing arts during the same period
Specific examples of collaborations with artists and curators for accessibility-related exhibitions or improving museum accessibility

준비된 대담을 마친 후에도 질의응답과 토의가 길게 이어져, “당연하지 않은 감각”의 첫 번째 시간은 예정된 시간을 훌쩍 넘겨 마무리되었습니다. 참여자들은 다양한 경험과 생각을 나누어주었습니다. 영국이라는 다른 공간적, 문화적 조건 속에서 활동하며 접근성에 대해 더 많이, 깊이 고민하게 되었던 경험, “장애를 책으로만 배우지 않게” 하기 위한 기회 확산에 대한 질문, 다양한 감각의 공존은 일상적이고 미시적인 차이를 관찰하고 공유하는 데에서 시작할 것이라는 생각 등이 그것이었습니다.

Even after the prepared dialogue concluded, questions and discussions continued at length, and the first session of “Uncommon Sensibilities” ended well beyond its scheduled time. Participants shared diverse experiences and thoughts. These included experiences of working within the different spatial and cultural conditions of the UK, which led to deeper and more extensive contemplation of accessibility; questions about expanding opportunities to ensure people “don’t learn about disability only through books”; and the belief that the coexistence of diverse sensibilities begins with observing and sharing everyday, microscopic differences.

“당연하지 않은 감각”은 너무 익숙해서 당연한 사실이라고 여겼던 것들을 의식해보고, 한 발 떨어지거나 더 가까이 다가가면서 어떤 감각도 당연하지 않다는 것을 배우고 느껴보는 시간입니다. 배움은 공개강연, 현장학습, 워크숍, 리뷰를 통해 이루어집니다.

“Uncommon Sensibilities” is a time to examine what we have taken for granted as natural facts due to their familiarity, and to learn and feel that no sensation is truly natural by stepping back or drawing closer. Learning takes place through open lectures, field studies, workshops, and reviews.

5월 16일로 예정되었던 현장학습은 급작스러운 폭우로 인해 연기되었습니다. 일정은 추후 공지됩니다.

The field study scheduled for May 16 was postponed due to sudden heavy rain. The new schedule will be announced later.

5월 31일에는 이윤정 안무가와 함께 하는 워크숍: 당연하지 않은 감각(2)가 진행됩니다. 워크숍은 코어 멤버를 대상으로 합니다. 워크숍을 진행한 후, 기록을 통해 함께 수행한 활동과 나눈 생각을 공유합니다.

On May 31, Workshop: Uncommon Sensibilities (2) will be conducted with choreographer LEE Yun Jung. The workshop is intended for core members. After the workshop, we will share the activities we performed together and the thoughts we exchanged through documentation.
